The
Pousada Alfama came about from the restoration of a historic building that exudes
authenticity while combining the traditional with the contemporary. Right at the entrance you are welcomed by a
work of urban art by the artist Bordallo II, ushering you into what will be a unique and innovative experience right in the heart of the Portuguese capital.
This hotel in Alfama is spread over 4 floors and has

typical and
original delights, and from here, you can experience the city’s most breathtaking
sunset.
The prominent location of this hotel in the
historic centre of Lisbon puts it right opposite the
viewing point of the Portas do Sol. This name comes from the old Porta do Sol, one of Lisbon’s medieval gates, which was part of the city’s Cerca Moura, destroyed in the 1755 earthquake.
The essence of Alfama is
fado, popular saints and tradition and it’s also an excellent starting point for getting to know the authentic heart of Lisbon, its charming streets with distinctive Portuguese paving, the traditional courtyards and the famous number
28 tram. From the Pousada Alfama, you can easily reach, on foot, Lisbon’s Cathedral, St. George’s Castle, the Santa Justa lift and other famous Lisbon landmarks, such as the Praça do Comércio or the Baixa Pombalina.
PIECES OF HISTORY
Choosing Pousada Alfama also means choosing to live side-by-side with the
Cerca Moura. Lisbon’s ancient wall, which demarcated and defended the city in medieval times. Here at the
Porta do Sol you can see remains of this vast wall and some of its towers. They are thought to have been built by the Moors during the time when they occupied the territory, from around the beginning of the 10th century until 1147, the year in which the city was reconquered by Afonso Henriques.
The Pousada Alfama, in partnership with the
Museum of Lisbon, displays a collection of exhibits that bear witness to the archaeological and historical significance of the neighbourhood. Items from Alfama’s ancient mansions, such as
facades, balustrades, but also
vases, busts, altarpieces, unique historical pieces that are really worth seeing.
And because the combination of traditional and contemporary is so evident, we just had to have a really up-to-date example of Portugal’s urban art, from the artist
Bordallo II. Part of his “Endangered Animals” collection, Bordallo II gives us a piece composed exclusively of coloured plastics and other darker-coloured waste recovered from rubbish. This waste has been recycled by the artist and gained a new life at the entrance to the Pousada’s courtyard.

LOCATION
This hotel, in the historic centre, is located at one of
Lisbon’s high points, which extends from the hill of St. George’s Castle to the River Tagus. Right at the gate of the Pousada are other gates,
the Portas do Sol. The
viewing point from where you can contemplate the city’s most stunning
sunset, as well as the whole
panoramic view, over the city, from Alfama’s traditional houses with their red roofs to its churches.
Just a few metres away is the imposing St. George’s Castle and, wandering down the Rua de São Tomé, seeing is believe the unique beauty of Lisbon’s Cathedral.
