The Pousada Convento Vila Viçosa, located in the region of Alto Alentejo, is located close to the historical centre of Vila Viçosa and is surrounded by beautiful gardens. Situated between Elvas, Borba and Redondo, Vila Viçosa is a quaint village, rich with history. The Pousada is located in the former Convent of the Chagas de Cristo, built on the orders of Jaime IV, Duke of Bragança, in the 16th century.

During your stay you can enjoy the outdoor swimming pool, have fun in the games room and relax in the drawing room that also has a piano. For your meals, we have a restaurant and a bar.

HISTORY

A religious house built more than 500 years ago to serve as the Pantheon to the ladies of the House of Braganza, the second most powerful noble family in the country, only after the Royal Family. Located next to the Ducal Palace, the convent, the church and the palace are witnesses of a rich historical era and, thanks to D. João IV, the Restorer, they serve as examples of a beauty and richness that are difficult to match.

LOCATION AND DESTINATION

Vila Viçosa is a land of churches, monasteries, chapels, hermitages and convents. This is the Land of Florbela Espanca. It is also known internationally for the abundance of marble that exists in the region. Visit the numerous museums and monuments or take the opportunity to experience a visit to one of the many marble quarries.

The Fundação da Casa de Bragança [House of Bragança Foundation] was created in 1933, a year after the death of King Manuel II, who, in his will of 20 September 1915, had expressed the desire to bequeath the collections and other assets of the House to form a museum. The Foundation consists of the museum and library of the Casa de Bragança (in the Ducal Palace of Vila Viçosa), the King Carlos I Agricultural School (in Vendas Novas) and of a fund which sends its proceeds to Portuguese charities and public utility causes.
