Set in the mountainous central region, the roads and motorways provide you with an impressive and majestic sight on every turn, favoring contemplation and inner peace. By following the signs to the historic center, you are unwittingly approaching the Pousada de Viseu. The clean streets, the well-kept houses and lovingly tended gardens enhance the feeling of well-being and peacefulness. Once you find the old hospital street, the bewilderment increases, this ancient hospital was completely rebuilt and adapted in 2009 by architect Gonçalo Byrne, standing today as an imposing landmark in the most quiet and peaceful urban center in Portugal.
It is impossible to remember the past and forget its grandeur when contemplating this building, built by order of Queen Maria I. The lobby will astound you, with its wide and comfortable cloister, in which the various nooks create different environments and where the sky, permanently visible through a contemporary cover, is displayed in all its natural splendor. The modern lines show an utmost respect for the particular features of this neoclassical site: the masonry work, the windows, the archways and the stairways shine with an enchanting and mesmerizing light of their own.
Sit in one of super comfortable brown sofas and carefully watch the white colors and the granite that surround you: punctuated by a colorful bar area with a grand piano, where talented guests are free to show their skills.
This area, which turns into a jazz and piano concert hall on Fridays and Saturdays respectively, helps you to immediately realize the epicurean nature of your stay. After all, the Pousada de Viseu is the only place where you can find a cigar lounge with spirit drinks in the old pharmacy area. Take your time to admire the beautiful original cabinets while choosing from the menu the cigar that will keep you company while you are listening to music and enjoying the ambiance.
It takes but a few more steps to reach the Dom Duarte hall, a very unique wine room with several products that will let you know this booming wine region a little better. Many of them come from the Dão region, while some were made in Alentejo; here you can learn more about the wine that will be served with your meal later in the restaurant, or even try a different wine, which you can carry with you or simply enjoy in this unique and unusual space.
Knowing that an absolutely quiet and comfortable night awaits you whatever room you choose, take some time to wander through the site, noting the various points where the ancient and the contemporary are invisibly merged, thus creating unique environments and contours. The original tiles and the eternal granite are juxtaposed with bright yellow shades, in a burst of color that enlivens and accompanies your steps. For a higher contrast, take the elevator to the 4th floor. Brand new, set in the place where the old roof used to be, it is a black and warm sea from which you can carefully admire the large white cloister lying at your feet.
Pestana tip: Everyone likes a knowledgeable tip, and in this case there is much to explore. The rich and distinctive wine region of Dão has wineries, vineyards and unique landscapes to offer you at first hand. Come to the Pousada and ask for a personalized program. The excellent connections between the Pousada and the wineries of the region will present you with a memorable experience!
