The Pousada Marvão sits within the walls of the village of Marvão, in the heart of the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park, in the Alto Alentejo region. It is made up of four small traditional houses and was one of the first Pousadas de Portugal to be built in the 40s. From Marvão Castle and the Pousada, at over 860 metres above sea level, you can enjoy fantastic views of Spain and the Alentejo plains. HISTORY

It all started in the 40s, when the Portuguese State first sponsored the construction of Pousadas in idyllic places in Portugal, which included Marvão. With this in mind, Marvão native Jeremias da Conceição Dias, a prominent figure in the village of Marvão, suggested the name of ‘Ninho D’Águias’ to what is now the Pousada Marvão.

In 1992, it underwent expansion and refurbishment to provide 28 double rooms and 3 suites, currently offered by Pousada Marvão.

LOCATION AND DESTINATION

Marvão Castle and its medieval village are known for their history and victories. There are special moments throughout the year, with the main festival being the Chestnut Festival, the ‘Festa do Castanheiro’, held on a weekend in November, which welcomes thousands of visitors who come to taste the new chestnuts from our groves and the new Talha wine. On the first weekend of October, the origins of Marvão are celebrated with the Al Mossassa Islamic Festival, with its market filled with produce from three different cultures and lots of entertainment. September is the month of the Patron Saint of the Municipality of Marvão, with the municipal holiday on 8 September. In July, the Marvão International Classical Music Festival takes place over 10 days. Let yourself be enchanted by the magic of classical music in idyllic places such as the Roman ruins of Ammaia and the Nossa Senhora da Estrela convent.

The Marvão municipality is also a summer destination: On the Sever river, you can enjoy idyllic spots, its natural pool, or the Apartadura dam. Throughout the year, we participate in culinary weeks, with themes such as Olive Oil and Game.
