History of Queluz:

Queluz (Which light?) I really don't know what light is that attracting people to visit, to know, to live and, in the end, fall in love with this city, so not want to forget this corner of Portugal where kings and queens lived and where the life runs as in the big cities, but the nights are still calm and asleep like the small villages in the country-side.
Probably this light inspired D. Pedro III to build his palace there, or the Arabians to adopt this valley of almond-trees to live.
I don't know if this light changes with the time, but the city changes. Queluz is now a City and capital of the council with the same name. It has more than 70.000 inhabitants and is localized at 14 Km from Sintra and at 12 Km from Lisbon.
It's famous for his palace in the rococo style, called "little Versailles". It's the most welcoming of the royal palaces and built in the XVIII century. Its gardens (Pensil or Neptuno and Azereiros), in the French way, are from rare beautiful. It has lodging a lot of state-leaders visiting Portugal.
Queluz is served by countless roads and several public transportations connecting to the capital (place of work of mostly inhabitants) and to other places in the district. There are some industries and a growing commerce, including malls and movie theatres.
Besides the palace, there are in Queluz some others interesting places that can have the attention of the first visitors as some megalithic monuments (about 2500 bC) and some buildings from the centuries XIV, XVII and XVIII. Around the old nucleus of the city started to appear some villas and houses used to be summer houses in the beginner of this century.
With the city growth from the last 40 years, Queluz has, today, distinct places with theirs own names: Massamá, Casal do Olival, Monte Abraão, Pendão, Alto dos Moinhos, Casal dos Afonso and Bairro Conde Almeida Araújo (Chinelo) are some housing group around downtown. Today, the city has 3 parishes: Queluz, Monte Abraão and Massamá.
Like in the prince's legend, look to this light and look for more details. These pages are just the start to the discovery of a history and style that can be found through those hidden streets in Queluz.
